How Insulation Works:
Insulation works by slowing the movement of heat from a hot space to one that is cooler. Heat moves in three ways: radiation, conduction and convection. Insulation stops these different movements of heat transfer.
You need insulation in your home to provide resistance to heat flow. The more heat flow resistance your insulation provides, the lower your heating and cooling costs. Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. In the winter, this heat flow moves directly from all heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, basements, and even to the outdoors. Heat flow can also move indirectly through interior ceilings, walls, and floors—wherever there is a difference in temperature. During the cooling season, heat flows from the outdoors to the interior of a house. To maintain comfort, the heat lost in the winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat gained in the summer must be removed by your cooling system. Properly insulating your home will decrease this heat flow by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat

Is your home ready for additional insulation?
Before installing new insulation in your home there are a few things that you should check and some decisions you should make before moving forward with your insulation project.
- Should you add additional insulation over the old insulation?
- This would depend on the age and condition of the old insulation as well as your budget. In a lot of cases you can install new insulation over old insulation and this will help your comfort and energy savings. However when you install a layer of brand new insulation directly over the top of old filthy insulation that is strewn with years worth of dust and animal droppings you are creating a "insulation bacterial sandwich" in your attic. This can negatively effect the energy conservation and air quality of your home. You can also air seal the attic floor if all the old insulation is removed before new Greenguard certified insulation is installed.
- Are your ducts sealed?
- Duct sealing is extremely important and often neglected energy conservation measure. The forced-air supply and return ducts should be an airtight, closed conduit joining the air handler to the buildings conditioned spaces. Duct joints should be sealed with duct mastic at all duct joints and seams. Duct leakage typically waste 10% to 30% of the heating and cooling energy purchased by the homeowner.
- How much attic insulation should I have or how deep should I install the new attic insulation?
- In Texas there are three recommended depths or R-values to achieve when installing insulation. The lowest recommended R-value is an R-30 or 12 inches ( Building Code ). The next level up is an R-38 or 15 inches and is becoming the standard insulation level in a lot of new construction. The highest recommended R-value from the Department Of Energy is an R-49 or 19 inches of insulation.
